The Lowlands festival looked just outstanding, and I love that North is still making such a huge fuss about Belgian beers - They really are the masters when it comes to beer! Nobody else can boast as much history, tradition or heritage when it comes to a brewing fraternity, and the Americans aside, there's nobody else with as much diversity either.

I like John's point too - Belgian beers really do retain a sense of their roots - or terroir as the wine buffs would call it.

Actually they'd probably be horrified at that bastardisation of the word, but whatevs! What I like about the Belgian brewers is that they adopt international influences but keep a very Belgian take on them. Big hopped IPAs for example are in danger of becoming almost identikit beers (close your eyes and ignore the label and too often the beer you are drinking could come from anywhere with no local roots) but try a Belgian IPA and you know where it's come from.John Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00132845616834779091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532575727687618362.post-68907341980363649212012-04-01T18:30:21.536+01:002012-04-01T18:30:21.536+01:00Congrats. and - although i;m quite old-fashioned -...Congrats. and - although i;m quite old-fashioned - next time i',m in, you can mix this one up for me. Black & Tan and Entire I believe were always mixed by bar people. I think the two bottle approach is better as the consumer can do it to their taste. One of the Cairngorm beers on cask is a mix of two - Wildcat and Black Gold. Only tried the Ying in Evil Twin's Ying and Yang - surely that approach could be copied - selling 2 1/2 pints or two bottles to mix as well as 'ready-mixed'.stravalenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532575727687618362.post-87195573701701294262012-03-02T13:53:36.146+00:002012-03-02T13:53:36.146+00:00Nice one Matt, an area I know little about other t...Nice one Matt, an area I know little about other than from GhostDrinker's antics :) Interesting you should mention sour beer blends...have you seen Steve Lamond's post today for #thesession? he writes about a new lambic blending business starting up in Northern Ireland. Things like Black & Tan and Entire are part of that heritage and are probably due for a revival. That's why I've just added them to North's arsenal!Matt Goreckihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07406279263827019052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532575727687618362.post-20277298646324203552012-02-25T12:00:38.840+00:002012-02-25T12:00:38.840+00:00I'm not so sure I would link beers such as gue...I'm not so sure I would link beers such as gueuze and flemish oud bruins (which are essentially the product of blending the same beers but of different ages)with the more modern trend of blending two different beers to create a third.

For me the imperial stout-IPA blend is the one that works best and I'm not sure why no UK brewer has tried this in any serious way. Hopping Frog in the States do it and superb examples have come from the likes of De Molen and Emelisse in the Netherlands.

Interesting that you refer to our "current inspirations" across the pond. I'm wondering if that is still the case. To be honest there is just as much interesting stuff now being made in the UK and Europe. Some of it does admittedly have a US influence but often with a home grown twist as well.John Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00132845616834779091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532575727687618362.post-67179775435476400082012-02-25T01:40:52.046+00:002012-02-25T01:40:52.046+00:00Beer Blending?
